Mike’s Musings …

Every Eye Shall See …

When a man accepts the office of an elder, he accepts the responsibility of a good work (1 Timothy 3:1). He finds his role in the Lord’s kingdom as one of leadership and one in which the example he sets must be one of faith ~ faith the brethren over which he has oversight can follow (Hebrews 13:17; Acts 20:28). Without question, MIKE SOLIDAY endeavored with extreme vigor to honorably serve the office of elder with righteousness and godliness.

When Mike accepted the office of elder, his health was beginning to decline. Still, he determined to lead as an elder must. His vision was beginning to diminish, yet he continued to lead the singing as frequently as possible. He would word fervent prayers. He presided at the Lord’s table. He commented accurately and willingly in bible studies. He did everything he could do to be the example to this flock he needed to be as a Christian first, and as an elder!

The time came when Mike’s health would no longer let him do the work of an elder as he believed that work should be done. His vision was gone, his stamina was weakened considerably, and other health issues were increasing. He felt he had no choice but to resign from this esteemed office saying, “I can no longer do the work required of me as an elder.” That didn’t stop him from encouraging others in their pursuit of righteousness in the Lord’s kingdom! Following his example of faithful service, his son, and his son-in-law both became elders in their local congregations and eventually, Mike and Maryann felt it best to stay closer to their home and worship with the Eastview church of Christ in Salem, IN, where their son-in-law Brian Perry is an elder.

Mike departed this life early on October 21. I muse on the reality of him resting from his labors (Revelation 14:13), and his physical suffering ended. I also remember him telling me about one of his last vacations when he told me, “I want to go while I can still see most of it.” Now, his eyes will see a wonder all Christians desire: “Every eye shall see Him …” (Revelation 1:7) I also muse on the reality that as Abel of old (Hebrews 11:4), Mike still speaks. He says, “Fight the good fight. Finish your course. Keep the faith.” There is no greater blessing while living than to be a faithful servant of God, and no greater reward for those who die in the Lord (Revelation 14:13) than to rest from their labors with the promise of the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8). Oh, that we all could see this reality as clearly as brother Mike Soliday!
