“He’s Waiting for the Angels”
In a devastating note from his wife, Sherry, news came that our brother in Christ, JOHN MYERS, had been admitted to Hospice Care. He was not expected to live for more than a few days. Sherry’s note read, “He is waiting for the angels now.” John died shortly before 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 27. His funeral was conducted this past Friday.
John was a master guitarist and pianist, whose talent took him throughout the U.S. and Europe. He later worked for IBM and Cummins. In 1984, he married Sherry, and in 1986 was immersed into Christ for the remission of his sins. He retired from secular work a few years ago and, upon retirement, accepted the work of preaching the gospel for the souls gathering at the West Second Street church of Christ in Bloomington, IN. He continued this with vigor until his hospitalization on November 29, 2025.
John’s love for God and his delight in studying His word were unquenchable characteristics of his life. Within the past couple of years, John was a faithful participant in a bi-monthly bible study where several preachers gathered to study, knowing “iron sharpeneth iron” (Proverbs 27:17). He graciously hosted this study the last several times we met, often arriving early to share concerns about the local work where he labored. His contributions to these studies were always encouraging!
Now, instead of waiting for the angels, John has been gathered to them (cf. Luke 16:22) and now rests from his labors (Revelation 14:13). We had often talked about death and the judgment. John diligently worked to prepare himself for both and urged all others to do the same! His passing leaves a huge void in our hearts and in the work of the Lord at West Second Street. However, as Abel of old, “he being dead yet speaks.” (Hebrews 11:4) Give ear to hear what he says. “Prepare to meet thy God,” (cf. Amos 4:12). Though John is gone, the work he pursued is not: let us rise and continue in the labor of our Lord, for someday, the angels will be coming for us!
