Mike’s Musings …

I Wish You Enough

My late sister, Ruth Forshey, found the following somewhere (I have no idea where – she was resourceful!) and used it at various times of the year to send her “best wishes.” Since her passing on July 24, 2018, I have tried to follow her tradition and share the sentiment of the statement. It reads …

“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish enough “Hello’s” to get you through the final “Goodbye.”

The contrast reminds me of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, where Solomon makes no less than fourteen comparisons, all meant to cause us to appreciate the reality of God’s balance in life (James 1:14-27). God has abundantly blessed us with “enough.”

When we consider the greatness of 2 Peter 1:3, “enough” comes to mind. What more could we ask for than God’s word providing us with all things related to life and godliness? And yet, God has blessed the faithful mind with “enough curiosity” that we keep searching the deep things of God through His word! When we consider 1 John 5:13, we note God gave us “enough” to assure us of eternal life, and simultaneously, “enough dedication” to continue pursuing our eternity with Him with diligence (Hebrews 11:6; 2 Peter 1:1-11).

Isn’t it precious to know God has provided us “enough?” (Hebrews 13:5) Oh, that we would learn the value of “contentment in God! So many are desirous of “more” in temporal things – things that cannot save the soul – and fail to be rich toward God! (Luke 12:21) I muse on the reality God has given us “enough” and yet so many are not yet satisfied!

As we close the year 2025, and, should God will, enter 2026, we do wish you “enough” – and may the supply house from which “enough” comes be from the bountiful table of God’s richest blessings!                                                  Mike and Nancy Davis
