Mike’s Musings …
Trending
On one of the social media feeds, a column appears titled “trending.” I seldom take the time to even read the headlines but have glanced at them enough to know the column speaks of things that are considered of “most popular interest” to the public mind. Well, this mind isn’t interested in most of those things because they tend to cause thoughts of things contrary to the assurances of God’s truth. I don’t need that information: I need God’s truth!
When Hosea said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge,” (Hosea 4:6), he wasn’t talking of “trending news” of the day or the world’s interests. He was speaking directly of a lack of knowledge of God’s word! Israel simply wasn’t listening to God, but instead was listening to the “trends” of the day and departing from the living God. I submit the same is true in today’s world! Many have a greater knowledge of the “trending news and realities” of this world than they do of God’s word and how the Christian can simply “Abhor that which is evil, cling to that which is good.” (Romans 12:9) Instead of accepting God’s word, many are seeking their securities within “trending advice” from men whose wisdom is far beneath the mind of God. Why? Usually, it is because of man’s inclinations: he’d rather know more about what man might do, or could do than build his confidence in what God will do with the soul that faithfully obeys Him! (1 John 2:25; Hebrews 5:9). My musing is why doesn’t mankind “trend” toward learning what God will do to care for His very elect (1 Peter 1)?
The “trend” of many souls is to subject themselves to the will of human superiors, even when those superiors are in direct opposition to God’s commandments. (Compare 1 Timothy 4). I truly muse on the lack of knowledge these souls defend! Hosea knew ignorance of God’s word destroyed God’s people, and the New Testament frequently warns against the ignorance of God’s word for the same reason! But instead of absorbing all they can of God and His truth, they fill their minds with “trending” stuff that only grants fear and woe.
For me, give me the Bible! Let its word dwell in me richly in all wisdom (Colossians 3:16). Then and only then will souls be calmed, realize God’s security of their souls, and be content to live for Him without fear of what man might or could do against him! That, dear reader, is what needs to be “trending” in our world!
