Waiting On the Call

This past week has been a “waiting game” for phone calls. I’ve waited for calls that will inform me of things I need to know or to request things they need to know or services I can render. Even now, I await a call to help another who needs transportation. These calls never arrive when I’ve nothing else to do: they invariably come when I’m busy with some matter that needs my undivided attention – or what I think requires my undivided attention.

Phone calls often disturb our meals, our conversations, our concentration, and our sleep. Phone calls even disturb our worship from time to time as folks think their cell phones are just as important to their continuation of life as a pacemaker is to a heart patient! While we understand our communication system has progressed from the days of the Pony Express and telegrams, has it progressed to the point of excluding God from being the priority of our lives? Matthew 6:33 and Colossians 1:18 would argue we need to separate ourselves from the phone (and all other disturbances) when in worship especially! Yes, it’s fine to be waiting for phone calls; but most of them can wait on us, or at least leave a message we can return at our convenience.

There is one call we must never ignore and that is the CALLING OF THE LORD. Of the nineteen times the word “calling” appears in the N.T., twelve of those times speak of the “high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” This “calling” is God’s commandment through Christ to obey Him (Matthew 11:28 – 30). To answer this call is to do more than hear His voice as you do the ringing of the phone. You must “answer” the call! Believe Him, repent of your sins, confess that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, be immersed in water for the remission of your sins, and be faithful unto death. This “call” is the most important call we will ever receive!

There is no need to wait for this call: it has been made several times each day since the first Pentecost that followed the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We continue to sound the call to all (Matthew 28:19-20). The problem is souls IGNORING the call, or, as some do with other calls, BLOCK THE CALL as being unimportant. Friend, this call regards your eternity! Answer the call!!! Muse on these facts!
