Mike’s Musings …              You Can’t Improve It …

You Can Only Obey It and Repeat It!

Through the years, a plethora of minds have endeavored to improve God’s Word. In defiance of God’s commandment to neither add nor subtract from its content (Deuteronomy 4:2; Revelation 22:18-19), man has done as he wishes, scribing creeds, disciplines, and other directives that defy the simplicity of God’s inspired word, and in fact contradict it in favor of man’s desires! In their feeble attempts to clarify its content, hundreds of commentaries foster their author’s ideas of understanding and frequently ignore the facts God established. No one can improve what God has said and by inspiration recorded (Hebrews 11:1-2; 2:1-4).

I hasten to add that every bible class discussion and every sermon preached is “commentary” unless the instructor verifies every point with proof from God’s unerring word! The very phrase “in my opinion” should raise the ire of every devout student of God’s word! The diligent student of God’s word permits only the mind of Christ to guide him (Philippians 2:5), allowing that word, and that word only to dwell in him richly in all wisdom (Colossians 3:16). He does not lean to his own understanding but places his full trust in the God of Heaven (Proverbs 3:5). He studies God’s word to show himself approved of God, caring not what man might think of him (2 Timothy 2:15; Hebrews 13:5 – 6). Since the diligent cannot improve it (Hebrews 11:6), the faithful soul realizes he can only obey it and repeat its content to others (2 Timothy 2:2).

I muse on that authority and authenticity of God’s word and then ponder why any soul could be discontent with all things that pertain to life and godliness! (2 Peter 1:3)
